a four-part ‘ber Month Educational Series on Myofascial Barefoot Massage

Part Two:

Pain as a protector 💪 Pain does not mean damage. Let’s talk about how we interpret pain points in massage.

Whether you still haven’t tried Barefoot Massage, or perhaps you were sold from the start and TOEtally love it already, we are committed to helping you in your wellness journey. Part of that is knowing and sharing our “whys.” behind our methods.

What is pain telling us?

Your body is always adapting:

Every day your body adjusts to how you sit, sleep, work, move, and handle stress. It uses whatever resources it has to keep you going. When those adjustments reach their limit, your brain sends a signal you can’t ignore: pain. Pain is your body saying, “What I’ve been doing isn’t working anymore. I need help.”

We love Barefoot Massage, and we’re so happy you’re here with us as we continue to learn in our practice and offer you evidence-based, intuitive, and overall healing bodywork sessions.

“What if your pain was trying to tell you more about your system as a whole”? – Erin P.

Barefoot Massage provides a style of pressure that signals to the nervous system it’s safe to soften. Broad, warm, sustained foot pressure gives lots of sensation with little threat, “pressure that doesn’t hurt.” Pain shows up in a spot, but it’s created by your whole nervous system. We work with both.

Jared says it’s “a really nice alternative to deep pressure deep tissue massage since using the foot as a tool allows us to deliver a more broad pressure than an aggressive pointy elbow or thumb. The myofascial release that comes with slow deep pressure triggers the parasympathetic nervous system faster I feel than a typical hands on massage.”

Understanding the why behind every stroke

Did you know that Camino owner Erin Poovey is an instructor for the Center of Barefoot Massage, teaching classes right here at Camino?

CBM offers Continuing Education classes for existing Licensed Massage Therapists, focusing on the exploration of how to engage deep tissue using theories of myofascial mobilization, stretch therapy, modern pain science and principals of tensegrity.

If you are a licensed massage therapist, consider taking a CBM class and learn more here!

“Understanding the “why” behind every stroke and the evidence that supports the approach as a whole is a huge benefit…traditional “deep tissue” often relies on pointy pressure from thumbs or elbows, which a sensitized nervous system can perceive as a threat, causing the client to tighten up further or increase perception of pain. We can use deep, sustained yet gliding pressure to down regulate a sensitized system. We can use the broad, warm surface of the foot to provide maximum sensory input with minimum threat. It’s like using depth as an exploratory distraction.”
